Leo's Latticini

Very friendly servers at this shrine for Mets fans, also known as Mama's; the manager tells me there's a second location at Shea, on the field level on the third-base side. Sit at the tables on the sidewalk out front, or take your sandwich to the café garden behind Mama's bakery next door.

Distracted somewhat by the signed photos of actors and athletes, I let my server guide me toward the "Italian special" ($6), a crusty seeded hero loaded with pepper ham, salami, fresh mozzarella, hot red peppers, and mushrooms. The slicer sits right up front on the low counter, and I got a taste of the ham, salami, and mozzarella as my hero was assembled.

My hero was good and meaty to the last bite, and that crusty bread held up very well despite the moistness of the mozzarella, peppers, and mushrooms. I may have spoiled myself for midtown sandwiches.
